The Nancy Drew Mystery Stories is the original Nancy Drew book series that spawned 56 books. They are the most famous Nancy Drew series, and are still in print today.
The Nancy Drew Mystery Stories were published in the United States by writing team Grosset & Dunlap from 1930 to 1956 in a series of hardbacks. All books contained 25 chapters each and lasted over 200 pages.
The first 34 books were revised to remove stereotypes, minor characters and outdated language. They were also shortened and sometimes the plots of the books were changed. For example, in the 1935 edition of "The Message in the Hollow Oak", Nancy wins land in Canada and discovers that there may be hidden gold there. In the revised 1972 edition, the setting is changed from Canada to Illinois, and Nancy is searching for a message hidden in a hollow oak tree by a missionary. Another example is in "The Clue of the Broken Locket". In the 1934 edition, the plot deals with the adoption of 18-month old twins and the reuniting of two families. In the revised 1965 edition, the plot deals with two separated twin sisters and a ghostly launch appearing on a nearby lake. The revised books were released from 1959 to 1976.
